Frequently Asked Questions

We will try and answer as many questions here as possible. If you cannot find the answer to your specific question .

Do I need visas?

The following information is meant as a guide only. Please be sure to check with your local embassy or consulate before leaving your own country.

   Nepal:

Visas for most nationalities are issued on arrival at Kathmandu's Tribuvan airport. A small fee in the region of 30 US Dollars or equivalent is normally charged.

   India:

Visas must be obtained in advance of your arrival in India. UK passport holders normally can receive 6 months visas (multiple entry available) from India House in London. If you are travelling to Tibet or Nepal via India in both directions you will need a multiple entry visa.

   Tibet:

Politically now part of China you will normally require a Chinese visa and an 'Alien Travel Permit' to visit Tibet. In addition it is normally stipulated that you can only visit as part of an organised tour such as those organised by Samsara Expeditions. Whilst we can organise both of these for you pre-arranging your Chinese visa can help when applying for the 'Alien Travel Permit' on your behalf but is not essential if you are not travelling to China other than on the tour to Tibet.

   Land Borders:

It is important when entering or departing a country by land that you obtain the relevant entry and exit stamps in your passport. Failure to obtain an entry stamp for example can result in problems when leaving a country if you have no proof of your entry date, time or border post.

Samsara Expeditions can not be held responsible if you do not have the correct visas or have not followed the correct procedures.

Insurance

We insist that all our clients have their own travel, medical and rescue insurance as a minimum. If you need help sourcing a suitable policy, contact us as we may be able to suggest suitable options.

Flights

Should you wish samsara to source arrange your flights with the rest of your package, then please let us know. We can include your flights as part of your package or alternatively we are happy for you to arrange your own flights.

Vaccinations

It is essential that you contact your local GP or medical centre at least one month prior to your scheduled visit to the Himalayas.

Scheduled Days

If the number of scheduled days exceeds those planned and prepaid to Samsara Expeditions, then the same daily rate as that prepaid will be charged. Samsara may ask for a deposit or credit card as security for this purpose.

Camping Treks - Will I have my own tent?

On camping as opposed to tea house treks, you may request a private tent at a small additional charge. We normally price our camping treks based on two persons in each tent.

Altitude Sickness

The effects of altitude sickness are not to be under estimated and can lead to fatalities in a relatively short space of time. Our decision is therefore final both in terms of the rate of advance and also any decisions made to safeguard any member of the group. It may therefore be necessary to reduce our altitude if anyone is showing or feeling any adverse affects that may be attributed to altitude.

Porterage

The role of our porters is usually to provide support to the group. They will normally carry group equipment such as tents and cooking equipment which we provide for camping treks. You will therefore be responsible for carrying your own personal belongings on the trek.

Which Sleeping Bag?

For mountain expeditions we strongly recommend a four season sleeping bag and the absolute minimum you should bring is a three season. Good equipment is available for purchase in Kathmandu.

Water & Drinks

Where available we normally provide one litre of water per person per day. Treated water is normally but not always plentiful and therefore may be rationed in certain areas of limited availability. Nepalese tea is normally readily available.

Food on Tour

On supported tours we provide three meals per day, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Lunch on some days will be a packed or express lunch.

Food in Cities

Hotels & guest houses that we use in towns & cities are normally on a bed and breakfast basis. Lunches and dinners are not normally included.
